History of the Gay Trucker's Association
The GTA was originally founded by Trucker Norm Flowers in 1999 and started as an
AOL entity. In December of 2001, Flowers purchased the groups first domain and
from then until July of 2003, Flowers operated the GTA as a private
organization.
In July of 2003, at the third GTA jamboree held in Nashville, TN, the group
officially organized, formed a board, and then proceeded to obtain recognition
as a non profit 501c.3 organization. Flowers presided over the organization
during its first year as a non profit, resigning in March of 2004. During the
GTA’s initial year operating as a non profit, the group doubled its size.
Representing nearly every region of North America and combining the talents of
nearly every imaginable aspect of the trucking industry, the GTA continues its
push to gain members and represent, advocate and educate the public and other
members of the trucking community about the vital role the GLBT and supportive
straight members of the community play in trucking.
As we begin our second year, we’ve moved forward toward a bright future. The
board now includes seven members, many of whom actually have OTR (Over the Road)
experience. Several of the board members are still actively driving and include
both male and female professionals.
This is an exciting organization to watch with a bright and promising future.
As our history evolves we will continue to mark our noteworthy achievements on
these pages.
