"Our Mission "Through our chosen path of distributing organic produce and promoting sustainable agriculture, we seek to create and foster a sustainable organization and culture. For us, sustainability means building a system that is ecologically sound, economically viable, socially responsible, and humane. Sustainable systems are inherently life-affirming, balancing input and output and conserving, if not augmenting, energy and resources. We pursue and apply participatory management systems and sound, ethical business practices. We support diverse communities and businesses, and are committed to providing opportunities for women in the workplace. "Who We Are "Veritable Vegetable is the nation’s oldest distributor of certified organic produce. We began in 1974 as a worker collective, supplying healthy and fresh food directly to neighborhood co-ops. Our goal was to lower food costs by acting as our own distributors, and were very much a part of the social and economic action movement of the times. "Today, we distribute produce from more than 250 growers to more than 300 independent retailers and restaurants in California, the Southwest, and beyond. Through the creativity and hard work of many women and men who have worked here since then, we’re proud to have earned a reputation for quality, integrity, and leadership. We pride ourselves on ethical business practices, on-time delivery, and reliable, courteous service. "Though our business has grown into an organic success story, our values remain intact. Healthy relationships and healthy communities are our priority. Through our work, we support and honor the health of small farms and sustainable agriculture, our rural and urban communities, and our staff. Economic success allows us to contribute to projects and causes we believe in, and to translate our values into action.
